Full Description
In October 1998 a large unlined chalk shaft, at least 30m deep and c. 2m in diameter, opened up at the southern edge of Citadel Road on the Western Heights at Dover. It was probably a well and may have extended to the water table 100m down. It is possibly of medieval date though it does lie within the 19th century fortress but in a location that is unlikely for the site of a well.
In 2004 the shaft was capped and the works associated with this were observed. No archaeological features or finds were noted during this work. (1)
