Full Description
A small scale excavation (TP26a) in the garden of 46, Tanners Street revealed a weathered chalkk surface penetrated by a circular hole. The hole contained only ealry post medieval dumped material including the sherds of a single redware pot. The hole fill and the chalk were overlain by later 19th century deposits. Limited fingertip investigation of the hole suggested that the chalk was a layer around one metre thick. A nearby pit (TP26) in the same garden, about 8 metres distant, showed no chalk and produced artefacts from the Roman period onwards. The adjacent garden wall, formerly the interior wall of a 17th century now-demolished building, contained abundant worked stone (Kentish ragstone) probably from an earlier medieval building. Although the evidence is circumstantial, this could be the site of the 'Yeldhall' or Guidlhall mentioned by Hasted as being in this location. Even if the chalk turns out to be a natural outcrop, the artefactual distribution,, when compared with nearby small scale excavations, requires explanation.
