Full Description
Medieval field system and earthworks in Stonebridge field, Lympne parish.
The earthwork ditches form a rectangular grid containing two small plots of land, one of which contains a substantial mound of 2m high and 25m in diameter. The flat top measures approximately 10m by 12m and is horseshoe shaped. The mound is is imposed upon the earthwork ditches, suggesting it is of a later date.
The mound does not appear on the tithe survey of 1839 nor on the 17th and 18th century manuscript maps of the area. Howevwer, it is not evident on any Ordnance survey maps either so it's existence cannot be discounted. Aerial photographs of 1946 show the earthwork system extending over a wider area than is extant today. The mound may be interpreted as a late medieval or post medieval windmill mound.(1-2)
