Full Description

Five buildings at Sheppey Hospital Site, Wards Hill Road. Minster assessed in June 2008 ahead of proposed refurbishment and development in the area. Thewse building appear in two blocks, the first comprises of two attached buildings labelled in the report as 'a' and 'b'. This block is situated in the south corner of the site with roads flanking it on two sides. Building A displays a significant amount of cracking on the south east wall, there is also a severe amount of roof spread in this corner of the building. Building B is also in a state of disrepair, with recommendations in place to demolish the roadside wall. There is concern about the risk of collapse that any refurbishment to this building would cause. The second block of buildings is is made up of buildings 'c', 'd' and 'e'. Building C's internal timber walls are not structually sounds and need to be rebuilt and it is unlikely that a worthwhile conversion function for this structure could be achieved. This building is joined to Building C, its ground floor is open to the southern side, the timber on this floor is thought to have suffered from rot, prior to conversion this building would require some additional supports for its roof. Building E is attached to the south-east end of Building D this building displayed no cracking but the wall in the outer south-west corner shows signs of severe bowing there is also evidence of rot and considerable vegetation growth on the south-west corner of the building which is thought to be concealing evidence of cracking. Prior to any refurbishments the vegetation needs to be cleared and restraints need to be added to front and rear elevations just below the first floor, it may also be possible to correct the bowing of the external wall to add further support to the first floor structure (1).
