Full Description
During a combined field walking and metal detecting survey of a field below Foxborough Hill a range of prehistoric, Roman, Saxon, medieval and post medieval material was recovered. This included 1068 calcined flints, a chipped axe and an axe-sharpening flake of Mesolithic date, late Neolithic-Bronze Age flints, including several scrapers, one or two pieces of flint-tempered pottery, probably of Iron Age date, some later Iron Age and Roman pottery sherds, including two pieces of Samian, a general scatter of medieval/post-medieval peg tile (3055 fragments). Also found were an Iron Age potin, 11 Roman coins, part of an Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch and four early post-medieval trade tokens and one jeton.
This material is thought to be derived from ploughing and manuring, moving material from nearby occupation sites. (1)
