Full Description
[TR 10174975 or TR 10214970] Two tumuli on Buckholt Farm, one opened but not completely. Much ploughed over. Shape indeterminate but they are too big for Saxon barrows and more likely to be Bronze Age. Vague traces of a third barrow. No ditch visible. (1) Two mounds on the property of the late George Dowker at Buckholt in Waltham were considered by Payne to be tumuli. One was opened by W.H Hammond who found on ground level a layer of burnt material containing fragments of a calcined bone and a few potsherds. (2) [TR 10114972]. "A" Much spread remains of a (probable bowl) barrow averaging 35.0 metres in diameter and 0.7m in height. No trace of ditch. [TR 10124966]. "B" Remains of a (probable bowl) barrow in a similar condition to "A", averaging 28.0 metres in diameter and 0.5 metres in height. No trace of ditch. [TR 10124962]. "C" A low swelling, probably that referred to by Crawford, possibly the vestigial remains of a barrow. All three features are situated in an orchard and planted with fruit trees. Surveyed at 1:2500.
