Summary

6th century Saxon inhumation cemetery found during railway excavations in 1885. Finds included swords, shield bosses, brooches and a bracteate. The site lies almost at the base of a gentle west facing slope OD 105m.

Full Description

[TR 16474070 - sited from map, scale 6" = 1 mile] In 1890, a cemetery, with grave goods probably dating from the late 6th century AD or a little earlier, was found in the cutting of the railway (now disused) just north of the bridge carrying the Lyminge-Paddlesworth road. The site lies almost at the base of of a gentle west facing slope OD 105m.
"In 1890, Canon Jenkins, a noted Lyminge antiquary, reported to the Society of Antiquaries that a number of burials of Saxon date had been discovered during the cutting of the Elham Valley railway line. The burial goods included a garnet set radiate-headed brooch and a knobbed cruciform brooch, the foot of which terminates in an animal head. Spearheads and shield bosses were also found."
