Full Description

(Summarised from source). During an archaeological watching brief ahead of the construction of a two storey extension to the rear of 49 High Street, Dover, the top of a brick built tunnel was encountered by the builders. Running north-west by south-east (parallel to the High Street) along the rear of Charlton Terrace, this has subsequently been incorporated into the kitchen of the adjacent Good Luck Chinese restaurant. Records of a Dover Council meeting in September 1939 suggest that the tunnel was built soon after that date. During the second World War it seems to have formed part of a complex used as air raid shelters. At the council meeting consideration was given to construct a connecting tunnel between Beaufoy’s cave and Lagoon Garage cave, High Street and an extension tunnel from the Lagoon Garage cave to the Tower Hamlets chalk pit and Tower Hamlets Road. Access to the tunnels would be gained from entrances in Tower Hamlets Road, further to the north west and off the High Street to the south east. (1)
