Findspot record TR 15 NW 508 - Prehistoric - modern finds within the water main trench in Hollow Lane, Canterbury

No archaeological features were found but from the top soil a flint core and weather Roman tile fragment were recovered. In the Northern 100m or so of trenching , several metal objects, consisting maily of late 18th or 19th century military buttons beloging to the Argyll, West Hampshire and 22nd light Dragoon regiments, and a medieval buckel were also found an collected. Also present but not collected was a considerable amount of redeposited and fragmented nineteenth and twentieth century pottery and peg-tile, probably the result of manuring the fields. The buttons may indicate that this area, as well as other on the Noprth Downs between Canterbury and Dover, had been used as a teneted army encampment during the Napoleonic wars.
