Full Description
A brick-built tunnel runs down, from what is now the playing field, to the East Musketry Gallery of the North Centre Bastion of Dover Western Heights. The tunnel is 1.54m wide and 2.59m high with a semi-circular vaulted roof. It had been whitewashed. Little remains of the above ground entrance.
In 2009 the entrance collapsed allowing a watching brief during repair works. The 19th century tunnel was blocked with a wall probably built shortly after the Second World War, when the above ground elements were demolished. A gap in this wall was re-blocked and the area buried again.(1)
