Landscape record TQ 45 NE 178 - Combe bank

Summary

Gardens and pleasure grounds dating from the 1720s and, particularly, the 1740s, associated with a country house and set in a small park. Extensive alterations to the gardens were made by Ludwig Mond and Robert Mond from 1906. Features include shrubberies and lawns near the house. To the south of the house are terraces planted with shrubs and laid out with paths. At the east end is the base of a palm house. Caves and an ice house at the west end of the rocky ridge were excavated out in 1815. The lake has a boathouse and garden seat on its banks. The north park became derelict after construction of the M25; recent attempts to develop it as a burial ground remain unresolved.
