War Memorial. Portland stone. 1920 to commemorate the fallen of World War I with additional dedications to the fallen of World War II.
DESCRIPTION:The memorial is in the form of a wheel-head (or Celtic) cross atop a tall chamfered shaft. This is mounted on a three-tier square plinth atop a two-step square base. The top tier of the plinth bears the following inscription in flush lead lettering on its east face: TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND IN MEMORY OF / THE MEN FROM THIS / PARISH WHO LAID / DOWN THEIR LIVES / FOR THEIR COUNTRY / IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914-1918. The four faces of the lower part of the plinth bear the names of the fallen of World War I and their regiments or Service. The south face of the memorial bears the inscription '1939-1945' followed by the two names of the fallen of World War II with another on the chamfer of the top step of the base.
HISTORY: Unveiled on 1st December 1920.
REASONS FOR DESIGNATION: The War Memorial at Bredgar is designated at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* As an eloquent witness to the impact of tragic world events on this community
* Although of a standard design, it shows care in its detailing and carving
* Occupies a prominent position in this conservation area
Three anti-vehicle obstacles define the boundary of the monument (2)
