Full Description
A possible 18th or early 19th century military site at Dunkirk consisting of a number of double-ditches making up one or more enclosures. Visible in aerial photos of 1946 (Run 49 Frame 4033) the ditches occupy the same site as the radar station but are overlain by field boundaries, themselves in place since at least the 1st edition of the Ordnance Survey 25" map. The enclosures appear to have projections like star forts, suggesting a gunpowder-era date. The precise layout of the enclosures is unclear and the arrangement of ditches suggests more than one phase of activity on the site.
Much of the site is within the Scheduled Monument associated with the radar station.
A desk based assessment of the site in 2011 by West Sussex Archaeology proposes a possible Civil War origin for the ditches, suggesting that they might represent defences for Canterbury during the periods it was held by Royalist forces. (1)
