Full Description
Cropmarks are visible in a field west of Hinxhill. They appear to be a series of ditches, perhaps making up a field or drainage system. The most obvious section consists of seemingly parallel ditches turning through ninety degrees. Visible in aerial photos of 2006 and 2008.
They do not correspond to any features shown on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map but similar marks to the south of Hinxhill Road are mirrored in surviving trees from removed boundaries on this map.
The late C18 OS drawings show the road kinking here which broadly lines up with the cropmarks.
A linear trackway and associated field and enclosures are visible as cropmarks on air photographs taken July 16th 2001. The trackway runs almost north-south, and is visible for circa 265 metres. At its southern end it disappears into woodland, while its northern end fades close to a modern field boundary and road. The ditches of the trackway are circa 7 metres apart. Some large ditched rectangular enclosures, presumably fields, share the trackway's alignment and appear to abut the track, one on the western side measuring circa 100 metres by 60 metres. Traces of at least one substantial rectangular enclosure also appear to cut across the track on a nw-se alignment, though it is not possible to tell which is the earlier feature. (1)
