Full Description
Structural engineering report of the tramway embankment in Halling undertaken by Adrian Cox Associates in Dec 2008. Tramway embankment, associated with chalk pits and lime kilns and later cement works. Extant above ground remains consist of a 35m long section including a tunnel roughly halfway along. Retaining concrete walls exist along the west side and the northern half of the east side, with a brick wall along the northern end. These are c.480mm thick and 3m tall, and battered to a slope of around 1 in 3 from vertical. Some cracks and rotation is noted, though the concrete itself is well laid. The tunnel is only c.1.5m in height, probably due to gradual increase in ground level, with brick lined sides and corrugated sheeting lining the roof. (1)
Constructed sometime between 1862 and 1897 (appears on 2nd Ed OS 25" but not on 1st Ed OS 25"), and abandoned by the 1930s.
