Full Description
Earthworks, perhaps of Early Iron Age date, were noted in an area between Stowting (TR 1241) and Brabourne (TR 1041) which is being studied by Mrs L S Paterson. "One interesting coomb lies to the west of Stowting Hill, below Park Farm. Along each side about halfway up the slope runs an ancient trackway and at the mouth of the coomb the trackways descend to the level where they are joined by similar ways from the surrounding hillsides; one of these ways can be traced southwards for some distance towards a spring. The tops of the valley sides are occupied by a series of banks and ditches of a puzzling nature; they are hardly formidable enough for military purposes, yet of sufficient size to prevent cattle straying if such was their use". (1) (Pottery and flint flakes were also found by Mrs Paterson in the same area - see TR 14 SW 46). These features are no longer evident. (2) Stowting. "earthworks (TR 120426 etc". (3)
