Full Description

Excavation at Snodland undertaken by Archaeology South-East in 2008 prior to development works found evidence of Roman buildings relating to the villa to the east and limited activity from other eras.

During the 1st century AD a field system was laid out in the west of the site. A series of pits also dates to this period. One large pit may have been a quarry. The mid-late 2nd century saw a new field system laid out. An enclosure wall measuring 20m long by 1m wide runs NW from the bath-house, with a well at the terminus, which apparently collected water from a ditch that ran NW along the same alignment as the wall. The 3rd century sees another phase of the field system. One of these ditches contained a the base of a prismatic bottle, a 1st century Colchester Derivative brooch, a copper finger ring, and horse fittings. Numerous pits date to this phase, the fill of one containing possible fragments of a Hofheim cup. The field system fell out of use in the mid-late 4th century. (1)
