Full Description
Excavation at Snodland undertaken by Archaeology South-East in 2008 prior to development works found evidence of Roman buildings relating to the villa to the east and limited activity from other eras.
In the second half of the 1st century AD a bath-house was built in the east of the site, the majority of which lies to the east of the excavation site (associated with villa TQ 76 SW 23). A drain runs from the SW corner to a nearby small pond. To the north of the drain was an external surface of rammed chalk, flint cobbles, and pebbles. A copper-alloy mirror disk was found. The building was modified sometime between the mid 2nd to late 3rd century. In the mid-late 3rd century the bath-house was demolished and replaced by a larger, possibly aisled, structure. This was on the same alignment as the previous bath-house, and may also have had a bathing function. Two post-built structures lie to the north and south, and probably had an agricultural use. The buildings were demolished in the mid-late 4th century. Demolition deposits included: fragments of glass bowl, a bone handle, antler waste, penannular brooch, D-section bracelet, a glass hairpin, and a small stylus. (1)
