Full Description
TR 152578, Round barrow, north of Stowting Court (erroneous grid reference, it should read TR 119416). (1) (TR 11904161) A large round barrow, part of which was destroyed when a barn was built (see plan). The primary burial is probably intact and it may also have had a berm about four yards wide. Scheduled. (2) TQ (sic TR) 11904161. Remains of a round barrow lie 90m north or Stowting Court on the opposite side of the road leading to Stowting parish church where a considerable rise in ground level occurs. It terminates at an old hedgerow on the south-east. The original diameter of the barrow must have been over 30m, the portion remaining being slightly over half, with a possibility of the primary burial being undisturbed. Present height from original ground level is 2.5m.Sections were cut in two places and finds included worked flints of Neolithic and Beaker periods, with sherds of domestic beakers. (3)
From the National Heritage List for England:
The monument includes a bowl barrow which comprises an earthen mound and an encircling quarry ditch. Part of the barrow, on the south and east side, was destroyed to make room for a barn which has itself now been removed. Some three-fifths of the barrow survives, however, including the area considered to contain the principal burial of the monument. The remaining part of the mound measures 25m NE-SW and stands over 2m above the general ground level. Having been spread by agricultural activities, the mound now extends 24m into the field to the NW. Nothing of the surrounding ditch is visible on the surface because it has been infilled by soil eroded from the mound. Partial excavation of the mound in the early 1970s confirmed the Early Bronze Age date of the barrow by recovering characteristic "Beaker"-style pottery. The fencing on the SE border is excluded from the scheduling
