Monument record TR 14 SW 31 - Barrow, near Combe Wood, Stowting

Summary

The remains of a barrow, located on a ridge between the road leading from Bradbourne to Stowting Common and the field behind. Now thought to be much damaged by ploughing. A ring ditch is visible as cropmarks on air photographs. Possibly part of a linear group, it may also have a second, concentric outer circuit although the evidence is vague.

Full Description

TR 11464260. The vestigial remains of a barrow occur as a ridge between the road leading from Bradbourne to Stowting Common and the field behind. This is north-west of the road and from the field entrance traces of the ploughed-out portion can be seen. (1)

A ring ditch is visible as cropmarks on air photographs taken July 16th 2001. Located near the top of the Downs escarpment in an area mapped as clay-with-flints, it is circa 19 metres in diameter. There are hints that a second, outer ditch may be present although the evidence is limited. The ring ditch appears to be one of at least four arranged in a near-straight line running parallel with the top of the scarp. The next nearest is the possible barrow TR 14 SW 55, 100 metres to the southeast. (2)
