Full Description
Roman burial ground. Most of the burials referred to in the literature as having come from this area were found in an area defined by the medieval boundaries of St Sepulchre's Nunnery. None of these finds were accurately located. Hasted (a) records burial urns from ground east of the Nunnery and from a nearby Orchard (1). In 1844 a coin was found by the Old Nunnery twenty feet from the Old Dover Road (2). In 1860 Brent (3) recorded the finding of burials during house building in the area of the Nunnery Cemetary and in 1861 the Kent Archaeological Society dug a badly recorded trench parallel to the Old Dover Road and inside the Nunnery boundary wall in which they dug out and catalogued at least three amphorae burials, and a number of other pots and finds (TR 15 NE 1572). They also located a burnt clay feature which was interpreted as part of an ustrinum funerary pyre. A number of possible pottery wasters found nearby indicates that the ustrinum may in fact be a kiln. (1-3) No further information. (4) Possible boundary of St Sepulchre's Nunnery. (centred TR 152 572). (5)
