Full Description
TR 180582. The Moate or Wyke is listed as a medieval moated site by the Moated Sites Research Group. The estate, originally called Wyke, had a succession of owners until about 1455 when Philip Belknap, mayor of Canterbury and sherriff of Kent, built a new house there. Soon after the name was changed to Mote a name that it retained until it was demolished in 1785. A 16thc map in the Cathedral Library and Archives, Canterbury, shows the moat alongside a wall running around the house. Nothing now remains except a few holes where cellars were and surface bricks. (The Mote shown on OS 3" Drawing of 1801 at TR 180581). (1-2) Visible on air-photograph. (3) (4)
