There was a Manor House Chapel at Charton, or Cerytone, or Cheriton. In 1300-1, the Chapel of Cerytone in the parish of Frenynghan (or Farningham) is mentioned in a dispute. (1) Foundations in Chapel Field, Farningham, have been excavated revealinga rectangular building 30 feet 6 inches by 17 feet 5 inches internally, with flint rubble walls 3 feet thick. These are possibly the foundations of the chapel belonging to the Manor of Charton. (2,3) TQ 5545 6700 Sited from a plan of the excavations dated 1949 and annotated 'Md. building'. (scale 10 feet: 1 inch) in the possession ofthe Dartford Borough Library, which names Big and Little Chapel Fields. In Little Chapel Field at the above siting is a slight hollow upon the N-facing slope, but no building material is visible. Field under crops. (4) No change. (5) During the building of the M20 motorway the surrounding field was used as a cement mixing plant. On completion of the motorway the plant was demolished and the concrete bases bulldozed away along with at least two walls of the chapel. These were subsequently left by the side of the field beside Eglantine Lane.(6)
