Monument record TR 15 NE 122 - Quenin Gate

Summary

Gateway into the Roman city of Durovernum Cantiacorum probably built in the 3rd century. This Roman gate was the short cut to the Richborough road and is still visible in the Broad Street car park embedded in the city wall. It was built of large Kentish ashlar ragstone blocks which supported a brick arch of 2.6 metres span. Thought to have still been in use in the Medieval period. Some time late in the 15th century the Queningate was blocked and a new ditch dug in front of it. The length of wall with its towers between Burgate and Northgate became the western boundary of the monastery circa 1492-1493.
