[TR 15455784] Cloister [NAT]. (1) The cloister at St Augustine's Abbey was excavated in 1928-30 by RU Potts. Three successive layouts were revealed; Remains of an early cloister dating from c978 lay within the area of a cloister of c1050, which was rebuilt on exactly the same lines in 1276. (2) Additional references. (3-4) It is reported that Abbot Aelfmaer (1006-17) built a cloister at St Augustine's, of which foundations were discovered during excavation. The cloister was enlarged during the Norman period and much rebuilt by Abbot Thorne in 1276. (See illustration card for plan). (5)
