TR 154579: Charnel Chapel, St Augustine's Abbey, built in 1288. (1) Excavations to the S of the abbey church were carried out in 1975-6 byH Woods (see Illustration Card for plan) with the purpose of locating the remains of the charnel chapel. Early 20th century excavations by St John Hope and Peers had suggestedthat it faced the 5th and 6th bays of the nave west of the road screen, but this was found to be a misinterpretation of the short lengths of footing they unearthed. The chapel faces the 4th bay and measures 7.5 x 6.15m. Its walls havebeen extensively robbed - the S wall entirely. (2) Additional references - as source 2. (3-5) Charnel Chapel, in the cemetery, St Augustine's Abbey, built in 1287 but not dedicated until 1299, probably the chapel on the S side of theabbey church nave recently re-excavated (see Illustration Card for location plan). (6) Two clasping flint buttresses of a large medieval building dated to the late 13th century were uncovered during excavations in 1972 by D Sherlock (at TR 15415770 - see Illustration Card for plan). Pending full excavation we can only speculate, but the buttresses are probably part of the E end of the charnel chapel, previously thought to be that on the S side of the abbey church. (7)
