Monument record TR 15 NE 246 - St augustine's abbey. charnel chapel
Summary
Charnel Chapel at St Augustine's Abbey known from documentary sources to have been built by 1287 but not dedicated until 1299. The chapel was probably used to accomodate any remains disturbed by new burials. Excavations between 1972 and 1975 revealed the foundations or buttresses of a building in the south west area of the lay cemetery which are thought to be the remains of the charnel house. The chapel of the charnel house is known to have been in a collapsed or ruinous state by 1542.
