Monument record TR 15 NE 248 - St Augstine's Abbey - Kitchen

Summary

Hexagonal kitchen at St Augustine's Abbey constructed in 1287-91 by Abbot Thomas Fyndon (1283-1309). Only the foundations of this now remain. It was excavated in 1867, 1920 and 1960. These excavations showed that the kitchen originally had a lead roof and probably four hearths and two spaces for doors. The kitchen was preserved for use in the King's Lodging and its roof was repaired in 1543. It can be seen on a mid 16th century drawing. Under the kitchen were found the foundations of earlier buildings consisting of a narrower 11th century refectory and a rectangular unaligned building. The latter may have formed part of the earlier Anglo-Saxon monatery.
