Full Description

(TR 15165774). Belgic pottery, Roman building, Saxon building, medieval finds. Two trenches were excavated by the Canterbury Excavation Committee at Nos 1-3 Canterbury Lane in 1955. The Belgic pottery and a Roman building probably belonging to the early 3rd century were found. In trench CXX part of a late Saxon building was discovered. It had been badly disturbed by later pits, but a little of its plan was recovered. In trench CXX a sequence of medieval occupation layers and floors was found dating from the late 11th or early 12th century onwards. Excavation indicated that the site had been continuously occupied into the post-medieval period, but few details of any structures were recovered. Trench CXXI was small and little detail about individual medieval buildings could be obtained, but it seems that the area was occupied continuously from the 12th century onwards. (1)
