Full Description

(TR 15365787 and TR 15345782) Roman burials, Saxon gold pin and medieval occupation was revealed when four trenches were excavated east of No 1 Lay Wootton's Green by the Canterbury Excavation Committtee in 1951. Only one trench was excavated below the medieval levels and contained four Roman inhumations and one cremation burial of the 2nd century. In one of the trenches, overlying the Roman levels, were two pebble floors dated by pottery to the 9th/10th century. These were sealed by occupation deposits, containing later 11th century pottery, and a pit. A cobbled surface which sealed the occupation deposits was in turn covered by the remains of a fallen flint wall which may have been a monastic wall, demolished after the Dissolation. In a second trench, at least two succesive medieval buildings dating from the 14th century were observed. A similar sequence of buildings was observed in a third trench. These sealed an occupation horizon and a pit containing 12th or early 13th century material together with a bone flute. The fourth trench only partly excavated, contained occupation levels and a pit of 11th century date. These were sealed by a chalk floor bounded by stakeholes. Occupation deposits sealing the floors contained 12th and early 13th century material and a residual Saxon gold pin of the 7th century. A series of make-up and floor deposits continued the sequence. These contained much residual material and some 14th century sherds. Dump deposits and possible demolition material sealed these levels. (1)
