Full Description
The Almonry of St Augustine's Abbey, situated outside Fyndon's Gate. Though badly bombed in WW II a few large stone walls survive (at TR 15365787 - see illustration card for plan). Sommer (a), writing in the early C17 mentions an Almonry Chapel, but this cannot now be located. (1) The Almonry was built in 1154. Excavated in 1951. (2) Almonry Gate. (3) Outside the gate was the Almonry, founded before 1128, which provided doles for the poor and housed a school. (4)
