Summary

Excavations in a cellar on the south west side of St George's Street in 1947 discovered the sleeper-beam trench and gravel floor of a late 2nd and early 3rd century Roman building. Part of the upper stone of a Donkey mill was found and indicates a baker's shop nearby.

Full Description

(TR 15055767) A Roman building and a donkey mill stone were discovered in the summer of 1947 when a small area was excavated in a cellar on the south-west side of St George's Street just west of White Friars Entry. The sleeper-beam trench and gravel floor of a late 2nd or early 3rd century Roman building was found. Part of the upper stone of a donkey mill was found and indicates a baker's shop nearby. (1)
