Full Description
TQ 56706638. An occupation site ?medieval was discovered in November 1969 during 'Operation Gaspipe East' on Eglantine Farm, Horton Kirby. The pipe-trench, running south-east to north-west cut through a series of eight features in a length of 356 feet. Six were pits or small ditches, one was a rectangular slot or posthole and the other a wide hollow. One pit contained five small sherds of thin shell-loaded pottery similar to that recovered from many 1st century Romano-Britishsites in the area. Subsequently part of a medieval cooking pot was discovered of 12th or 13th century date. (1) Trial trenching at TQ 56686636 in fields above Mussenden Farm yielded numerous sherds of medieval pottery. (2) TQ 567664. Romano British, series of 8 pits/ditches. One contained shell-loaded pottery of possible first century date. (3)
