Full Description

(TR 15435775 - OS 1:1250 1972) The nave, St Augustine's Abbey Church,Permission was first sought from Rome to demolish some of the Saxon buildings and to move their precious relics to other sites. The construction of the church probably started circa 1073, the nave being finished by Abbot Scolland's successor Abbot Wido, who died in 1091, as a continuation of Scotland's crypt and presbytery (TR 15 NE 309). (1-4) Excavations on S side of nave, 1974-5. (5-6) Additional reference - as 6. (7) Additional reference. (8) The nave was a structure of 11 bays. It has been much destroyed. Little remains of the main arcades but some rubble core and parts of the pier plinths survive. At the W end are signs of C15 alterations or repairs. The S aisle has largely disappeared except for the core of the S wall but a large portion of the outer wall of the N aisle still stands. This applies to the 6 W bays, retained as part of Henry VIII's palace. (9) Additional reference. (10) Two bays of the nave were built by Scotland, 1073-87, continued by Wido, 1087-99, probably completed in early C12 under Hugh I, 1099-1124. (11) List of excavations. (12) Excavation reports and plan (see illustration card). (13) Additional reference. (14) Historic Englan archive material (15)
