Full Description

(TR 15495775) The transept of St Augustine's Abbey Church had in each arm an apsidal chapel to the east. The walls of the north transept, including those of the apse, are standing in places 5-6ft high, but the south transept has been destroyed to a lower level. All probably built by Abbot Scotland, 1073-87. (1-4) Additonal reference. (5) In 1900 the N transept was excavated by St J Hope. 1901-2, excavations continued by Routledge. 1914, excavations under the crossing by RU Potts. In 1918 the Tomb of Roger II, in the S transept was excavated by Potts, who carried out further excavations in the S transept in 1924. 1931, the tomb of Abbot Dunster, in N transept, excavated by Potts. In 1960 an area to the E of the N transept was excavated by Rigold. (6) Additional reference (see illustration card for plan). (7) South transept of the Norman abbey church, built by Abbot Scotland before 1087. Apsidal chapel perhaps once dedicated to St Martin, but later to St John. N of the chapel is the base of a spiral staircase beyond which was the altar of St Katherine where 2 abbots were buried. Transept reroofed and perhaps vaulted in mid C14. At S end are graves of 4 Anglo-Saxon kings, moved from the original Saxon chapel (TR 15 NE 267). North transept, reached by steps from the crypt. In a recess to the N of the steps was the altar of St Benedict and the apsidal chapel was of St Gregory, said to have been completed by 1091. In NW corner, site of Abbot Dunster's grave. This transept also reroofed in mid C14. (8)
