(Area TR 143579 (2)) Nr Whitehall Rd, Canterbury, a number of pits and a Belgic hut, occupied from c25 to 70AD, were excavated. Pottery brooches and coins of Cunobeline and Dubnovellaunos were found. A plan by S Frere shows Belgic cremations nearby (2) and two fragments of a Belgic coarse ware jar were sealed by Watling Street. (1-3) This area has now been built over. All finds, including the coins, are in Canterbury Museum but until the 1944-57 Canterbury Excavations Report is published it is not possible to relate any particular find to its site. Excavations at Whitehall Road, Canterbury in 1954-55 revealed a Late Iron Age rectangular building, over 13m long x circa 7m wide overall, overall, Watling St. One long side and one short side consisted of a continuous trench for timber walls; the other long side appears to have been formed by posts set in individual postholes. A 'pit', circa 5m square, with rounded corners and edged with stake holes was classified as a Late Iron Age sunken-floored building by Rodwell. (5) Neolithic pottery was found during excavations between 1953 and 1955 at Whitehall Road. Several shallow scoops produced sherds of pottery which belonged to an early variety of Neolithic B of Ebbsfleet type. (6)
