Full Description

[TR 14755786 - sited to Telephone Exchange, Stour Street] Remains of a wooden Roman quay discovered at a depth of 18 to 20 feet. 1st and 2nd century Samian ware and 1st to 3rd century coarse ware were found.(1-2) [TR 14755786] It is now considered that the east branch of the Stour is post-Roman, and as the structure is clearly related to the river it must be of later date. It may either be a medieval wharf or a bridge giving access to the Grey Friars on the opposite bank. Medieval pottery was discovered. (3)
