Findspot record TR 15 NW 101 - Romano-British silver hoard, Canterbury

Summary

A hoard of late Roman silver was found, in 1962, during the construction of a road bridge close to the angle of the defences which lies some 70 feet south-west of the London Gate [TR 15 NW 66] and just outside the line of the city wall. It consisted of 11 silver spoons, nine of the long-handled type and two with "duck-head" handles, a silver implement with a prong, a gold hook-and-eye fastening, a silver pin, a gold ring, and two unstamped silver ingots. There were eight coins of the period AD 254-393/410 in the vicinity but it was impossible to prove a direct connection. Five more objects from the same hoard were declared to the authorities in 1983. They were two stamped silver ingots, a long-handled silver spoon, and two clipped silver siliquae. The clipped condition of the siliquae implies a date of after AD 410 for the hoard.
