Full Description

A Roman urn was found in 1850 close to the castle while excavating for the Gasworks. It was found in a pit about 12ft deep, filled with black earth, bones and rubbish. The urn is a good example of Upchurch ware. (Gasworks is described on OS 1:500, 1873 centred at TR 14555749. A gasometer is shown at TR 14605743 which in view of the depth of the excavation may well have been the findspot). (1)
