Full Description
[TR 14915781] "A portion of a foundation, a heavy flat stone bedded on buff coloured Roman tiles" was discovered by J Pilbrow in 1868 during drainage work in the High Street opposite the west corner of St Mary Bredin's Church (sic). Its age and construction is considered doubtful by Auth 2. "On the opposite eastern corner of the same church [TR 14925780] was found, at a depth of ten feet, a large amphora, two feet two inches high and seventeen inches in diameter, in its broken state. It was nearly filled with earth, but it contained in addition forty-one Roman coins, mostly illegible and firmly corroded to the bottom of the amphora, those that could be deciphered being nearly all of Carausius". (1) Now in Worthing Museum. (2) Auth. 2 also site the broken patera, potter's mark 'Clemens', box flue tiles, 'regular pavement of cement' and a mutilated Samian bowl, found during drainage work in 1860 to this spot. (3-4)
