Full Description

(TR 14535759 (1)) Roman pottery, medieval street and river revetment revealed during April 1953 in two trenches cut to a depth of 4ft by by a mechanical excavator at right angles to the River Stour on a site lying south-west of the Tannery and north-east of St Mildred's school. The earliest horizons consisted of possible Roman flood silts overlying natural gravel. Sealing the waterlogged Roman deposits was a layer of hard gravel possibly a street containing residual Roman pottery and a sherd of 11th to 12th century pottery. A deposit of silting sealed the gravel, and above this was a layer of black mud containing late 13th century material. Evidence for a late medieval revetment of the river bank was found in the form of wooden stakes driven to a depth of around 2m. The uppermost deposits consisted of dumps of soil and building debris.
