Full Description

[TR 14765768 (1)] Roman water tanks, courtyard metalling were revealed during excavation in 1979 at 3 Beer Cart Lane. The earliest levels, dating from the early 2nd to mid 3rd centuries AD consisted of a sequence of courtyard metallings. Two water tanks were found in association and a third possible tank was observed in contractor's trenches. The tanks were fed by wooden water pipes, joined by iron collars, running under the courtyard. They were possibly fountains. The late Roman deposits were sealed by a layer of black loam, which may have accumulated during a protracted period of abandonment. A thick deposit of "turned over" soil containing a mixture of 8th to 11th century pottery, suggested agricultural activity during the Saxon-Norman period. At the frontage of Beer Cart Lane was the edge of a metalled street aligned roughly east-west. The street, probably established in the late Saxon period, was a major road leading to London and continued in use until the 14th century. A number of 11th century rubbish pits cut through the road and its associated horizon. In the late 11th or 12th century two flimsy timber buildings were constructed on the site. The boundaries of these buildings remained fixed for the next 800 years, and details of their medieval and post-medieval structural histories were recorded. (1-4)
