Full Description

(TR 14555808 (1)) A medieval quay was discovered during trenching at Westgate Grove in 1957. A very solid masonry structure, the river-ward edge being in line with the centre of the modern road, was observed by F Jenkins. It was situated close to the left bank of Stour, the intervening gap being filled with black mud. No evidence of date could be found because of the high water level, but it seems that it may represent a well-constructed quayside, perhaps built about the same time as the nearby Westgate. (1-2)
