Full Description

TR 14795779. Sited from OS 1:1250, 1974 to Jewry Lane. The discovery of a Roman shrine within the city is set out in a memorandum dated 1700, preserved in the Cathedral Library, among the papers of Edward Hasted. This paper was not used in Hasted's History of Kent c1777- 1799 and 1797-1801. The handwritten account by Hasted purports to record a discovery made 'in the year 1639'. Urrey calls this date into question and states that it might be 1687 instead. The paper records that during the digging of a cellar some 28ft x 30ft in Jewry Lane (which in the 18th century included the length now known as Whitehorse Lane), workmen found a circular or oval foundation. Three feet below the surface they encountered a great scatter of votive offerings to a shrine, in the shape of medallions and coins, some of gold, many of silver, with a multitude of brass and copper, dating to the 1st and 2nd centuries. The remains of sacrificial animals lay around. The shrine may have been associated with a water deity, sincea stream ran beneath it. It has, however been suggested by T Tatton- Brown that this could be the laconium of the public baths. (1)
