Full Description
TR148567. The Dane-John Lime Works just south of the city was bisected by the Elham Valley line when this was built in 1889. An extensive system of 2ft (61cm)- gauge mineral lines was laid down to transport chalk from the quarry faces to the kilns, operation was mainly by winch on inclined tracks. The quarry is now derelict though the sites of the kilns and some of the tracks can still be seen. (1)
The lime works is visible on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd edition OS Maps, starting as a chalk quarry, and developing into a lime works.
