Full Description
(TR 14905773 sited from CAT map. CAT Ann Rep 1979-80 p6). Roman Public Baths. The southern corner of the public bath house, excavated by Professor Frere in the late 1940s and early 1950s was recorded during excavations in July 1978. The earliest phase of the bathhouse is presumed to be Flavian cAD69-96. A cold plunge bath with its associated drain was uncovered along with other small rooms further to the west, which had been located by Professor Frere. The cold plunge bath and its adjacent room were backfilled during the second century and a large heated room constructed. A drain was addedexternally, partially overlying the levelled original phase 1 outer wall of the bath house. One corner of the complex was robbed out during the Roman period although there is evidence to suggest that it continued in use into the fourth century. (1-3) Further remains of the Calderium (hot room) and its associated hypocaust, belonging to the Roman public baths were uncovered, including the apsidal south-east end of the building and the praefurnium (stoke room), between December 1986 and May 1987. The Calderium was rebuilt at about cAD300 (see illustration card). (4) Excavations indicated that the first phase baths were probably in use by c125AD and were subsequently altered in the early third century. (5) Additional bibliography. (6-7) Additional bibliography - not consulted. (8) Additional bibliography. (9) RCHME Inset Map of Roman Canterbury shows the Roman baths as recorded for the town map of Roman and medieval Canterbury. (10)
