Full Description
[TR 14985746 approx] Two deeply-set piers of hard concrete chalk and masonry, standing 12ft apart were observed 32ft from the outer face of Riding Gate [TR 15 NW 141] by J Pilbrow during drainage excavationsin 1868. The space in between was partly filled with silty soil. Thepiers clearly represent the foundations of a medieval bridge crossing the city ditch. (1-2) The bridge across the wet moat outside Ridingate was restored in 1497-8. (3)
