Full Description
Roman remains consisting of a wall and floor with thick gravel foundations were found during trenching in the garden of 38 St Margaret's Street, 106ft 6inches behind the north frontage of the street (TR 14805769 - OS 1:1250, 1971). Too little survived for a firm conclusion about what was found as the remains were disturbed by later pits. It was however suggested that the floor may have been part of a podium possibly from a temple associated with the theatre (TR 15 NW 107) or it could be part of the stage or stage building. (1)
An alternative view is that these foundations relate to the temple portico (TR 15 NW 110) - perhaps part of a formal entrance overlying earlier street metallings. (2)
