Full Description

(TR 14325799 sited to Whitehall Gardens from OS 1:1250 1966). Roman tile kiln and pottery kilns. During development work at Whitehall Gardens in 1956 three kilns were located. Two were circular up- draught pottery kilns, the material found within them suggesting that one was of the mid and other the second half of the 2nd century. The third was a rectangular up-draught tile kiln, probably of the later 2nd or early 3rd century. One of the pottery kilns may have been converted at a later date for lime burning. An unusual funnel-shaped pit was also found. The lowest filling contained debris suggestive of iron working. (1) Additional bibliography. (2)
