Monument record TR 15 NW 474 - Romano-British Pottery Kiln

Summary

Roman pottery kiln. A rapid salvage excavation took place in April 1978 at 16-21 North Lane. The earliest find recovered on site was a badly damaged Roman kiln aligned south-east/north-west with a stoke hole in the south-east. The kiln originally had two fire chambers only one of which survived. After firing the kiln seems to have been deliberately destroyed. Possibly associated with it, and contained within a thick deposit of Roman top soil, was a scatter of late 1st or early 2nd century AD pottery.
