Full Description
(TR 14705825) A Medieval building, lime slating pit, post medieval tanning pits were discovered during excavations in advance of re- development at 46 North Lane in 1984. The mortared flint and chalk foundations and well-preserved floors of a 14th century building were excavated. A series of eight lime slating pits in an open yard to the east of the structure were associated with its rebuilding in the 15th century. The structure was rebuilt in the early 17th century. The building was cut in the late 17th century by a series of large rectangular tanning pits. In the 18th century the backfilled pits were overlain by a foundry which stood on the site into the 19th century. A trench cut from the street frontage back to the river, produced evidence for further 17th century tanning pits. (1)
